SUBANG JAYA, July 30 — Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he sympathises with jailed PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but was doubtful of his release under the country’s present leadership.
Muhyiddin, who was responding to reporters asking if he would back the Bebas Anwar movement, stopped short of making a clear declaration of his support.
“We are already sitting on the same table, and are friends. God willing, in the near future, whatever outcomes, we share together,” he said in a joint press conference with PKR to announce a collaborative road show on 1MDB.
“I hope you understand what I am trying to say,” he added.
He stressed that he was the only minister who had visited Anwar when he was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998.
“So you can understand my feelings, my sentiment. I sympathise with what is happening to him, and I also understand the legal process,” he said.
“I think if there are parties who ask whether Anwar can be freed, in this environment and political situation, with the leaders that are currently in power, I do not see it happening,” he added.Muhyiddin was removed from his post as deputy prime minister exactly one year ago in a Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He was subsequently sacked from Umno last month, following his suspension from his deputy president post in the party.MALAY  MAIL  ONLINE
